Hi Mr. Engle,
I loved your March 2020 piece “How is the Coronavirus Outbreak Affecting Your Life?” I especially liked the question-and-answer segment from Apoorva Mandavilli that you added; it is great information that needs to be read by everyone, especially since there is so much misinformation going around right now. However, what I liked best was the conclusion paragraph where you said that it may provide comfort to know that others are going through the same things right now.
As a college senior, it feels pretty isolating to not have a graduation ceremony on the calendar, even though I know millions are in the same boat. I know your article was geared more toward high schoolers, but I think the college experience with COVID-19 is just as valid. Many of us, myself included, felt as though we were on the cusp of the greatness we have been working toward for years, and now we have to watch it dissolve before our eyes.
Personally, I have wanted to work for the New York Yankees since I was in high school, and this year I was supposed to be interning in the Yankees organization in Charleston, South Carolina. To me, it felt as though my dreams were starting to come true. I had grand plans to excel at this internship and work my way up to the Bronx, but unfortunately the Coronavirus changed all of those plans.
I would love to send a 450-word piece to you that is in response to your article, explaining my perspective, as a college senior, on the effects of the novel Coronavirus, how it short-cut that dream but how I’m rebounding as a female knocking at the door in a resoundingly-male industry--and during a time when sports are “canceled”.
Thank you so much for your time. Please feel free to email me at mbschnei@ncsu.edu or call me at (919) 604-2671. I will follow up with you in a few days.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
